Three years ago, over 70 web professionals, business people and technology innovators met at the Amoskeag Business Incubator for the first BarCamp Manchester. This September, the fourth BarCamp event is being held and it’s promising to be the biggest success in what is becoming a local tech community tradition.
A BarCamp conference is unlike any other technology conference. Rather than being planned by a committee months or even years in advance, each community works together to create its own event. A BarCamp generally has an underlying theme, but the individual topics and sessions are organized shortly before or even at the event. This enables BarCamp to be much more targeted to the needs of the technology community in Manchester and the state of New Hampshire. The other advantage of planning topics closer to the event is that the topics cover today’s cutting edge technology not last year’s technology.
"Bar Camp is an expression of community. It's passionate people coming together to engage, to plan, to scheme about changing the world doing work that they love,” Said Chris Messina, BarCamp co-founder. “We've basically taken the hallway conversations that happen at most old-school conferences and placed them squarely in the center of the event. And what you get, well, you'd have come to BarCamp to understand just what makes it different.”
As with previous years, this BarCamp will be focused on web technology innovations happening in Manchester and all of New Hampshire. Since the attendees provide the content, the event changes from year to year, but topics usually range from in-depth sessions on web technology to panels about starting a business. One change from last year’s event is the addition of a maker room which will have a series of contests challenging attendees to build small devices and simple machines out of everyday materials.
Anyone who has something to present or has the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. The conference will be held September 26th at UNH Manchester from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
